Hope’s War
Shot back in 2005, Hope’s War tells the story of a soldier returning home from Iraq and dealing with PTSD. When I shot this film, this wasn’t a hot topic. Recent films like the Dry Land and Brothers have tackled the subject, but when we shot no one wanted to deal with it in narrative form. And it was for this every reason that I made the film. Having seen PTSD destroy someone that I know, I understand how necessary it is for us as Americans to rally around our soldiers when they return from war, because physically they’re back, but mentally some of them never leave the battlefield.
“Hope’s War was a kick in the gut. I don’t think I’ve ever been more affected by a film.”
